Geographical description– Miasino is a small and delightful village halfway between the lake and the mountain, on the eastern shore of Lake Orta. The territory has an irregular geometric profile, with accentuated altimetric variations, starting from a minimum of 290 and reaching a maximum of 779 meters above sea level.
The village, which is undergoing a phase of building expansion, sits on the top of a low hill where ancient stately homes and villas stand surrounded by large gardens. One of the two hamlets of Miasino, Carcegna, directly overlooks the lake. The other, Pisogno, is located on the slopes of Mount Formica. Miasino is also an excellent starting point for numerous nature excursions.
A bit of history- Miasino has very ancient origins. During the Middle Ages, it was part of the great bishop's fiefdom of the San Giulio Riviera, named after the evangelizer of those areas. Miasino is a village of Gallic origin which, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, was enriched with various noble residences, thanks to the presence of bourgeois or aristocratic families. Miasino can boast very ancient findings, even dating back to the Iron Age, mostly pottery and decorated terracottas.
What to see and what to do- Miasino boasts, among its main monuments, the parish church of San Rocco, rebuilt from scratch starting in 1627. The reconstruction coincided with the terrible plague about which Manzoni wrote in "The Betrothed". For this reason the church was dedicated to San Rocco, patron saint from the plague The façade of the parish church of Miasino was only finished in 1933 by the Turin architect Carlo Nigra who wanted to respect the original design.
The interior of the Parish Church is rich and elegant, with valuable Baroque and late Baroque works, created by both local, Milanese and Tuscan artists. Stucco, gilding, frescoes and paintings on canvas decorate this church which, with its 45 m long and 27 m wide, is among the largest in the entire Novara area.
Another jewel of Miasino is Villa Nigra, of sixteenth-century origins, but enlarged in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, an example of a noble country residence (now owned by the Municipality). AND one of the most elegant houses on Lake Orta and is located right in the center of Miasino.
Villa Nigra is characterized by grandiose internal loggias, granite and wrought iron balustrades and decorated with valuable frescoes. The name derives from the last private owners to whom it belonged, including the architect Carlo Nigra, the one who completed the facade of the church of San Rocco.
